For the first time in recent history, the world has been upended by a devastating global epidemic, the effects of which are still being felt. Its impact on our lifestyles, the way we work, even the way we think, cannot be underestimated.
In 2020, being able to look back at our own 100-year history and draw strength from it proved to be vital. This is not the first time SACMI’s men and women have faced dramatic challenges, such as those met by our founding fathers in the years between the two world wars.

Change, indeed, is the hallmark of our times. Its accelerating pace poses a constant challenge. It requires us to look to the future from a new perspective so we can comprehend its scope and see what's truly at stake for our companies and - more generally - our communities.

So it is with pride that we observe how SACMI, in a year that was extraordinary in every way, demonstrated its readiness to cope with the challenges posed by modernity, even the test of a global health crisis.

Overcoming this challenge was a three-phase task: first, the priority was to ensure worker safety, in Italy and around the world, by safeguarding our people’s health in compliance with the protocols progressively issued by the authorities and by limiting the impact of the pandemic in our local communities. Second, the company simultaneously implemented solutions to ensure continuity of production (and therefore employment) for all customers, all over the world.

Thirdly, and no less importantly, came a new wave of digitalization, vital to the operation of a new business model and, above all, essential to re-orientating organization according to a model of shared responsibility, where more expert personnel and young ‘digital talents’ work side by side to take SACMI into the future.

The development of a clear strategy aimed at digitalizing production and management processes - a plan drawn up well before the pandemic - allowed the Group to hold its market position and retain every single employee. But that’s not all: it was also able to continue investing in growth and pursue innovation according to a customer care logic that has long been a characteristic of our success.

In 2019 we celebrated our centenary. It was also a perfect opportunity to renew our mission, one based on the principles of solidarity, cooperative democracy and continuous innovation; a mission that permitted the company to grow throughout the 20th century and become an international leader in the industrial plant engineering field. In more recent years, SACMI conceived and subsequently incorporated a highly specific strategy into its organization, one that embraced the challenges of digitalization and environmental sustainability and saw the company weave a new web of interaction between technology, people and processes.

Financial solidity, internationalization, an ability to respond dynamically and proactively to market challenges; these have been the cornerstones of a strategy that, today, allows us to look to the future with confidence, just as effective vaccines are becoming available, indicating a clear way out of the emergency.

Once again, I offer my heartfelt thanks to SACMI’s men and women, whose passion, determination and skill have made it all possible.

Paolo Mongardi, President of SACMI Imola S.C.
